Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
