The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
