Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to question certain decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
